The RAC British International Rallies of the fifties, known as "The Rally of the Tests" are fondly remembered by those who competed in them.

Since 2001 the CRA Rally of the Tests has recaptured the spirit, style and sounds of the '50s following the wheel tracks of those early events seeking out the finest rally-roads and most challenging tests.

This 8th edition was no exception with many crews hailing the event as the "Best Yet". The route ran from Bournemouth to Llandudno with three concentrated days packed with over thirty tests, sixteen regularities and a couple of evening sections. At the end of all this, John Bateson and Mark I'Anson in a Mercedes Benz 300SE emerged as worthy winners by just over a minute from Frank Lenehan and Cath Woodman in their Mini Cooper.

After starting from Bournemouth, the event revisited some of the tests that have become part of "The Tests" folklore including Porlock Hill, Ditton Priors and Swynnerton Army Camp as it headed north and west to an exciting finale around The Great Orme at Llandudno. There was also a welcome return to Porlock village for a supper halt where the Ladies did us proud with a fantastic meal that prepared crews for a tough evening's competition in the Somerset Lanes.

Two overnight halts at Taunton and Stoke-on-Trent allowed Fred Bent and his team to explore new territory and several new test sites have already become "must-do" venues for future events including Okehampton Camp, Malvern Showground and Kinmel Estate.

Once again, the 8th Rally of the Tests benefitted from support from CES UK Ltd. who injected some generous CES hospitality to the event. At the Gala prize-giving dinner in Llandudno there was loud applause when CES boss Howard Warren announced continued CES support for CRA events in 2009.

See the News Reports and Results page to look back over the 2008 Rally of the Tests and get your application in early for 2009 when the event heads north to explore new territory both sides of Hadrian's Wall. Provisional dates – 29th October to 1st November 2009
